Oppression is the systematic and unfair treatment of groups of people. Oppressive beliefs are rooted in history and based on aspects of a person’s identity—like race, gender, class, sexuality, ability, or immigration status. Internalized oppression is when oppressed groups begin to believe the stereotypes about themselves. Example: a Latina woman believes that it is unprofessional to speak “Spanglish” with her bilingual colleagues at work.
Colonization refers to the historical process of domination, exploitation, and cultural erasure that has deeply impacted indigenous and marginalized communities. Colonization continues to affect mental health, as the trauma of displacement, forced assimilation, and violence is passed through generations.
Generational trauma refers to the emotional, psychological, and behavioral effects of traumatic experiences passed down through families. Descendants of colonization, violence, and oppression can carry unresolved trauma in their bodies and minds, often without fully understanding its origins.
Patriarchal expectations are the social norms and pressures that come from living in a system where men, especially cisgender men, hold more power in society, politics, family, and culture. These expectations maintain control by informing what is “unacceptable behavior” based on gender. Example: A woman is expected to not voice her opinion in order to stay agreeable with others.
Collective grief is the shared emotional experience of loss within a community. What many of us are currently experiencing is grief. Loss of safety. Loss of connection to community. Loss of loved ones through deportation. Loss of future dreams.
